From the Bishops this month is a Pastoral Letter for the Year of Faith by Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis). Writing as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in October 2012 Cardinal Bergoglio provides a vision of the signifcance of the Year of Faith for the people of his Archdiocese.  The document remains a Archdiocesan Pastoral letter but it does provide us with something of an insight into the concerns, style and tone of Pope Francis and it challenges us to think about what the Year of Faith might mean in the various dioceses throughout Australia.

Bishop Julian Porteous, Auxillary Bishop of Sydney, explores Our Lady as the Star of the New Evangelisation.  The importance of the kerygma for the New Evangelisation and how to present it to the contemporary mind will be explored by Bishop Julian Porteous and other international and national keynote speakers at the 5th CREDO Colloquium on the New Evangelisation in Sydney on Friday 16th & Saturday 17th August 2013.  (www.credosydney.org)

From the Bishops this month explores the vocation of service in a homily given by Archbishop Denis Hart. The homily was presented at a Mass for members and staff of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference at Saint Mary of The Cross Chapel, North Sydney, 27th November 2012

Homily of Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP for Pentecost Sunday, with the Sacrament of Confirmation and Inauguration of the Year of Grace, St Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta, 27 May 2012

This month the topic for From the Bishops chose itself and who better than to report on the election of the new Pope than one of the electors the Archbishop of Sydney , Cardinal George Pell. The following article appeared on 17th March 2013 as the text for the Cardinal's regular column in The Sunday Telegraph. The Cardinal of course is from Sydney as is the newspaper and his references to Jesuit institutions in the article, are those in his Archdiocese. As a national audience you are no doubt aware of the schools parishes and other projects that are works of the Society of Jesus in your diocese.

This month we have something a little special in the From the Bishops section. It is longer than our usual entry but the extra time needed to read it is worth it. Originally written on his trusty typewriter this is a slightly edited version of a homily presented by retired Sydney Auxiliary Bishop, the Irish born Bishop David Cremin. The homily was delivered at the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture; Charles Sturt University on March 17, 2009.
